SPONSOR A DOG

If you cannot adopt a dog, have you ever thought of Sponsoring a dog?

clarenseFor some of our dogs, finding a home is extremely hard. This can be because of the age, breed, or long term treatment that some stray/abandoned dogs may need, In particular as some of the dogs that we rescue might have a behaviour problem, which some families might not be able to cope with unless they were animal experts.

These dogs will probably have to stay under our care for a very long time and sponsoring helps to cover some of the huge costs involved during their period of stay with us or at one of our foster homes. Every dog that comes under our care is wormed, tested for Leishmania, vaccinated, micro chipped, and sterilised. The medical bill for each puppy or grown dog can be from 100 - 250 euros each. This amount does not include things like other operations, food etc. Each long stay dog can cost on average 30 euros per month to feed, worm and flea treatment. This cost does not include vet treatment for other medical conditions that the dog may have.

Help us to maintain a happy and deserving good life for our long term dogs. Your Sponsorship will help towards their care.

We never put an animal to sleep unless it’s very ill and only then under our vet’s recommendation.

henry henry
Henry the 14 year old Pointer handed into our shelter in Pizarra along with his 2 mates Molly and Snoopy. George the kennel manager took Henry to have his lump checked out and run blood tests today.. and Henry has Cancer. We became suspicious after finding a hard lump on Henrys shoulder...we suspected as much as his lymph nodes are swollen aswell. The vet has confirmed cancerous cells and has now sent off to the lab for a detailed analysis. Our initial feelings are Henry is too old and too frail for us to consider the invasive and sickening treatments such as chemo and operations, although we will wait and see the type of cancer and what our options are. For this old guy to be left in a shelter, no matter how great and caring our shelter is ... is just heartbreaking...will he end his days here rather than on a sofa in front of a fire ??? I look at my own dogs and think if only I had room.. I wouldn't hesitate, but my last mastin Lucas refuses to accept any more dogs in and I think 16 is enough anyway. Henry is ok at the moment.. we cannot get him to put on any weight, but he is eating good and seems in no discomfort that we can see. We will care for Henry and do whatever needs to be done for this old boy...his needs are paramount...we will care for him and love him and pamper him until Henry tells us otherwise, he will not suffer in any way. Today he is fine, and we pray he continues to be for a very long time. We will probably start him on CBD oil and ointment as we believe this helps cancer sufferers, it has helped our dogs in the past. Would you like to help us to help Henry..? could you sponsor him? or donate to help us with vets bills?

Video of Pepe when he was rescued 30.12.2019

Pepe's story:
Today we saved this poor, poor boy.
He in very bad state. Nothing but bones, covered in sores and rashes, probably leish then looks like mange as well. Both ears are about to fall off, skins flakey, covered in fleas and tics. Just completely malnourished. No chip. It's going take a lot to get him right again.
Is eating and drinking and has pink gums, will leave him to rest tonight then get him to vets first thing to see whats going on. Lovely temperament, lets us pick him up, comes over for a stroke. Going to spend a lot of time with him, he's very poorly but is on his feet, he has some fight left in him, so fingers crossed we can pull him through.
This is the worst case yet at the shelter says George Fifield kennel manager.

31.12.2019
Pepe went to the vets yesterday,. he has the highest leishmaniasis level they have ever recorded and it has affected his liver. Thank god his kidneys are ok.. so he can have the injections and meds he needs. one injection everyday for 28 days.. really expensive, but he has to have them, in conjunction with an array of other meds and special diet. and lots and lots of fingers crossed he gets through this.
We are pleased to say Pepe is happy and tail wagging and eating and drinking well but it's going to be a very, very long road to recovery L

This old Mastin female, which we rescued in August 2018 was 9 years old and looks like she had been abandoned in an Olive Grove and in a bad condition. How long has been around, no water or food. What can we do we are full already with others waiting to come in, but could not ignore this poor dog. Luckily a friend of ours has taken her in till things are sorted out. What a state she was in , covered in sores, had tic fever, absolutely covered in fleas, *high level Leishmania* and in a starving condition as well as a very bad rope or collar burn marks on her neck from being tied up a long time and seems to have a hip problem?  She is now one of our long term dogs. Please help towards her care

johnny

JOHNNY was born in 2005 and has had a hard life. Lately he had his skin torn off from his back by his companions at the local dog pound and had his leg dislocated then he was adopted by a Spanish man but the dog escaped and was involved in a car accident. He was rescued and we took him to the vet and the owner was contacted as the dog had been chipped at the Pound. Due to the expense of the treatment the man no longer wanted the dog and we made him sign the over to us. This is the video of Johnny taken a few days after his operation.

marina marina

Marina born 2013 and her three 7-week old girls were walking along the side of a busy road. Marina was limping badly so we took her to the vet only to find out that it is an old injury. Her front paw is crushed or badly broken and the same further up her leg. How much she must have suffered, poor little thing and on top of all done, getting pregnant. We have a dilemma as the vet says that it cannot be operated on with a good result do to the amount of fractures, this mean that she will be wearing out her paw from rubbing on the floor and we are not sure what pain she is in or will be in the future as she holds it up all the time. The other option is to take the leg off and she will probably be better off as dog on three legs still have a happy life. She is a real friendly little girl. Don’t know how she was suppose to hunt to help feed her litter considering the state of her leg?. We also did a Leishmaniasis test and was positive and very high so she needs expensive medication to keep the level down as well as tablets to control the level. The tablets will probaby be for the rest of her life.

CLARENS

clarens clarens

This is Clarens born approx 2011 and found on the side of the road, he had given up. He had a hole in the leg that was infected and limped when he got up, so he went on antibiotics. The bite or whatever it was went through his skin, through the muscle and into the bone. He is very thin, very bad teeth and was full of tics and fleas and was eventually going to our shelter but we now have a foster for him where his life will be quieter. He is now one of our long term dogs

SANDIE
sponsor sandy
This is when we found Sandie in 2009. She was found collapsed on the side of the road. Covered in ticks and fleas and her skin was completely encrusted. She was dehydrated and starving. She was taken immediately to the vets for treatment to be administered. She had dermatitis in her feet, which made it painful for her to walk and was also diagnosed with leishmania but only luckily only on her skin. She is now on the road to recovery and she is looking wonderful and is a completely different dog. Sandie is sweet and gentle natured and must have been someone’s pet at one time

Merlin - Born 2009. He was dumped with her sister over a fence when he was a young dog, We have tried to home him several times but he was always afraid of strangers specially if you raised you hands or picked up a stick. This is sure signs of abuse by the previous owners and Merlin has never really recovered from that. He is now part of our long term dogs

CANDY

Candy - Born 2015-. She is a very friendly and lovely Podenco female. Loves her cuddles, is gentle, very alert and very agile, typical of her breed. She walks on the leash, however she can never be taken for a walk without a leash and can jump a 2m fence from a stand still position and would probably not come back. With all that energy it was sooner or later that someomething would happen and she tore some ligaments on her leg with has left her with pemanent damage

Podenco's are very special, loyal and loving pets. In a well-protected environment, Maika likes to show off her skills such as running around and returning a ball. She runs neatly with harness on the leash. However, she is very submissive an recently tore a igament, which has left her with permanent damage

KAHN

KHAN - Born 2017. Crossing over a stream on her way to a business meeting a local resident saw this little face peering out from the reeds. Tiny and trembling she couldn't leave him to suffer in the climbing 30 degree plus heat. Gengis Khan as he has now been named by a kind fosterer we have was riddled in tics. On he went to the meeting with the lady and then to us at Animals in Distress. Unfortunately, things did not work out with a previous owner and now he is back with us, but not in a foster home but in our shelter in a pen. He does not like to be in a caged environment and is constantly chewing his tail. Kahn has serious issues do to his previous cicumstancest. He is eager to please but need someone that understands the breed and a behaviourist so he is now one of our og term dogs.

Eva. Born 2015.
I was found in the living in the countryside with my 5 puppies,
I was a very young single mum and life was hard.
Luckily a kind man phoned animals in distress and my life changed forever.
I had shelter, regular food and a safe place for me and my babies.
I live with my foster mum, she is the kindest person I have ever met.
My foster mum has been very patient and calm with me and I have been here so long now that to move me would not be a good idea as I am still very nervous of people
